I am a Dutch Artist living and working in Boorloo (Perth) on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja

I feel very fortunate that I am able to live and work here on Aboriginal land whose sovereignty has never been ceded and its colonial history is brutal.

As a migrant I am very aware of issues of identity, language, place, belonging, alienation, different cultures and the diverse narratives of place. Therefore my work often is informed by the opposing forces of intimacy and distance. Shortly after I arrived in Australia 35 years ago I discovered as a hiker the magnificence of this ancient land and began advocating to help preserve its wild pockets. The tension between the beauty of the bush and the insensitivity of colonial history and planning often inspires my art.

As a person who has created and lived in an intentional community for over 30 years I like to explore, the personal and the collective, what brings us together and repels us apart, I am fascinated with rituals of gathering. Having been an African drum teacher and drum maker for 25 years, I am still tuned to translate rhythm into my work in colour and composition. I work mainly with acrylic paint and collage, on large backgrounds, but lately started working in watercolour and gouache drawings in a series of very small fine works.
